Curvices (2013) is a mobile application Rozalie Hirs (music, poetry, voice), Cox & Grusenmeyer (design, animation), Yvan Vander Sanden (software design and implementation) and Machiel Spaan (spatial design) for Klankenbos (Neerpelt).
Where are you? What do you hear? Native birds are singing in the woods or sounds are birds from Portugal via your mobile phone? You hear a Trans Siberian Express or only cars on the road through the forest? Exploring the terrain you touch sounds and words, make a journey through the woods, to the world, in as much as you want to modify.
For Curvices crawled design duo Cox & Grusenmeyer in the skin of lighting designers. They were responsible for the sound walk Hirs a matching light show. What happens when a mobile screen is treated as a stage? And how to light intensity and color determine the atmosphere of poetry?
The technical development of Curvices was made possible by Yvan Vander Sanden, the audio and video files linked to GPS coordinates.
For spatial design Hirs called on architect Machiel Spaan. Curvices was made possible by Wiek Hijmans (electric guitar), Patricio Wang (bass), Carlos Dalla-Fiore (mixing, mastering), Mathijs de Valk (technical assistance). With special thanks to Magnus Robb for permission to use his recordings of birdsong. With financial support from a Composition Scholarship 2012-13 from the Performing Arts Fund.
